This is definitely an approach to campaigning which I have never seen before: Vote for our guy because otherwise people might commit suicide!

I read recently that more than million people the world over take their lives every year - more than are murdered or killed in wars. The latest World Health Organization figures suggest a suicide takes place every forty seconds, somewhere in the world.

And so it's not hard to imagine that on November 3rd, if the election can be called by then, there might be a sort of grim mass exodus from this sad planet should Bush pull this election out. My generation may be particularly vulnerable to the urge to lay back in a warm bath and open up their veins as chants of "Four More Years" echo horribly from every 24 hour cable news station.

You know you have a dud candidate when you have to threaten mass suicide to round up votes. It is not that different than the old hunger strike. "If you don't give me what I want, I'm going to have to hurt myself." An interesting psychological imbalance to observe...and restrain...and medicate.

You may think me uncompassionate when I confess that this has no effect on my intent to vote for Bush and my nefarious plan to encourage you to do the same. (You can also volunteer here if you have some free time!) Call me what you will - but I find it much more compelling to vote for something than against something. I'm voting for lower taxes, for decisive leadership; for better security and for a stronger military. I would encourage you to look at the issues and the speeches and compare Kerry's Senate record with Bush's executive one.
