It ends up that while Goldberg's character, 'Mavis,' is away from the front desk Bush stops by the hotel to use the facilities, leading to this scene which Today showcased:
Janitor: "That's what, that's what I try to tell you! The President is here in your toilet now!"
Mavis: "Well go get him out!"
Janitor: "Oh yeah right. An Iranian immigrant telling the President to go. What? Why don't I just run around the airport and shout, yeah Jihad! Holy war! Holy war!"
Mavis: "Fine! I will go get him out of there myself. I can't believe he's in there doing to my bathroom what he's done to the economy!"
It is obvious that her own political leanings are being broadcast overtly in this show. That is her right (hers and her producers) and there really is not any issue with that. However, she does have to remember that her job is to entertain, not to serve as a political analyst. If these jokes are funny and keep people watching, then she is doing her job.
In a Today show interview by Ann Curry, the following exchange occurred:
Goldberg: "Oh it's just so easy, I think. You know and I guess it's, we just get the opportunity to say some things that people are actually thinking. You know, we're not sort of trying to tell anybody how to think, we're just saying here's what people are actually thinking about. You know people do think the economy is in trouble. And people do think it's a little strange that we, you know, are back at the UN begging for help after we sort of gave them the, you know, did that to 'em. [gestures] So, you know that's kind of the, the phase we wanted to go in, you know. It's not disrespectful I will say. We don't disrespect him because he is the President of the U.S. So, but, he's, he's, he's good fun for me."
The Programming Insider at MediaWeek.com has this to say about her show:
There are certainly people out there who do enjoy her humor. However, they had better start watching the show right away, or it will most certainly tank.
