Some unsurprising political views have been broadcast in 'Whoopi', Whoppi Goldberg's new sitcom:
In the sit-com, titled Whoopi, Goldberg plays a former Broadway performer who now runs a small Manhattan hotel. In the episode, she learns that Bush will be driving through the neighborhood that day. She declares: "Tell him to stop by the UN and apologize to Europe, starting with France."

It ends up that while Goldberg's character, 'Mavis,' is away from the front desk Bush stops by the hotel to use the facilities, leading to this scene which Today showcased:

Mavis, to hotel janitor: "Bush is in my can?"

Janitor: "That's what, that's what I try to tell you! The President is here in your toilet now!"

Mavis: "Well go get him out!"

Janitor: "Oh yeah right. An Iranian immigrant telling the President to go. What? Why don't I just run around the airport and shout, yeah Jihad! Holy war! Holy war!"

Mavis: "Fine! I will go get him out of there myself. I can't believe he's in there doing to my bathroom what he's done to the economy!"

Later, in a scene not played by Today, Mavis charges: "Black Republicans make about as much sense to me as Jews for Jesus."

It is obvious that her own political leanings are being broadcast overtly in this show. That is her right (hers and her producers) and there really is not any issue with that. However, she does have to remember that her job is to entertain, not to serve as a political analyst. If these jokes are funny and keep people watching, then she is doing her job.

In a Today show interview by Ann Curry, the following exchange occurred:

Curry: "What made you decide to take on the President of the United States?"

Goldberg: "Oh it's just so easy, I think. You know and I guess it's, we just get the opportunity to say some things that people are actually thinking. You know, we're not sort of trying to tell anybody how to think, we're just saying here's what people are actually thinking about. You know people do think the economy is in trouble. And people do think it's a little strange that we, you know, are back at the UN begging for help after we sort of gave them the, you know, did that to 'em. [gestures] So, you know that's kind of the, the phase we wanted to go in, you know. It's not disrespectful I will say. We don't disrespect him because he is the President of the U.S. So, but, he's, he's, he's good fun for me."

Having fun by yourself is a good thing. It is even better when the television audience is having fun too. However, the ratings seem to indicate that the viewers are not having nearly as much fun as Whoopi is. Perhaps what people are thinking is not the same thing she thinks they are thinking.

The Programming Insider at MediaWeek.com has this to say about her show:

On NBC, considering Whoopi at 8 p.m. (#4: 7.4/11) could not beat a repeat of 8 Simple Rules on ABC (#3: 7.8/12), even another upcoming Thursday telecast may not be enough to save the struggling sitcom.
Personally, I have mixed reviews on the jokes she used in her show. The 'apologize to France' joke was stupid. The 'Bush in the bathroom' sequence was actually pretty funny - especially the Jihad part. The 'black Republicans' one-liner was offensive to me, because I don't believe racial qualifiers adequately define individuals.

There are certainly people out there who do enjoy her humor. However, they had better start watching the show right away, or it will most certainly tank.
