Just in time for Christmas, seasonal cards from the perennial source of yuletide cheer, Planned Parenthood:
They're back. Planned Parenthood announced today that it is "pleased" to once again sell its "Choice on Earth" Christmas cards that sparked a national outrage last year.

"Planned Parenthood believes in every individual's right to make choices and live in peace with our planet. Our holiday card has proven to be very popular with America's pro-choice majority for almost a decade because it sends an inclusive seasonal message for people of all faiths. I am proud of the card," Planned Parenthood president Gloria Feldt said.

This is an inclusive seasonal message for people of all faiths? As an individual who believes that abortion is morally wrong, I don't find it terribly inclusive. Why didn't they use "Killing the Unborn for fun and profit on Earth" or the ever popular "Irresponsible sex without fetal side-effects on Earth"? These are no less inclusive than the phrase they selected - although they might be a bit unwieldy.

This is not an abortion discussion post. I'm not going to detail why I believe the way I do, and I'm not looking for arguments in the comments. This is an issue where people already know where they stand and why. The issue here is not pro-choice vs. pro-life. The issue is activism and "culture-creep".

Abortion. Christmas. There is not a correlation there. The first term describes a medical procedure used to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. The second describes a holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. The two are not related in any way. I would take it so far as to boldly state that there are most likely fewer abortions performed on Christmas than any other day of the year.

Then why would this secular organization want to participate in this holiday? Two reasons. The immediate gain is the profit from the selling of the cards. The second reason is to continue to permeate every corner of society with their 'inclusive' message. These cards were first seen (and mostly ignored) last year. This year the controversy increases. In five years, cards with messages like this one will be commonplace and no one will have an issue with it...despite how oxymoronic and nonsensical it is.

I think Wendy Wright of Concerned Women of America makes a pretty valid point when she says that Jesus never would have been born had Planned Parenthood been around:

"If Planned Parenthood had existed 2,000 years ago, it would have targeted Mary, an unwed, pregnant teenager, for a profitable abortion," Wright said.
As someone who has been strongly counseled to abort my second child, I see her point. During that pregnancy, the doctors thought there was a slight chance of Down's Syndrome. The medical staff (doctor, then the nurse, and finally a 'special' counselor) informed us of our choices. To us, however, there was no choice. Our decision disappointed them, but because of it, there is one more Artist in the world.

Choice is truly no substitute for Peace.
