Here is an curious idea: train the residents in high gun crime areas to administer first aid to gunshot victims (Manchester, England):
Lindsay Wong, a support worker from the Moss Side-based DASH/Positive Futures, said: "We will be targeting ordinary people from those communities most affected by gun crime who will be willing to help out.Due to restrictive gun control laws, one would think that gun crimes would be non-existent...after all, it's illegal. I suppose that if law abiding citizens are not allowed to own or use firearms, the only thing left to do is learn gunshot wound first aid (and make sure your neighbor does also)."They will be given basic first-aid training and be made readily identifiable, so that in the event of an emergency people know where to turn.
"Ambulances often have to wait until the police have ensured an area is safe before they can go to the scene, but if we can provide medical attention in those first few minutes after a shooting, that could ultimately be the difference between someone surviving and not surviving."[ Emphasis Added ]
Don't take me wrong, I believe everyone should have a good understanding of first aid. It just seems that this proposed action is treating the symptoms instead of looking at the disease.
