I have no idea what makes a serial killer broadcast his foul deeds. For that matter I have no clue what makes them commit their foul deeds. Regardless, a recent letter has rekindled old fears in Wichita, KS:
The BTK strangler thinks he has outsmarted everyone, and he sent photocopied snapshots of a victim's body -- strangled in 1986 -- to prove it, says a former FBI profiler of serial killers. What is odd about this case is that the last known communication from this serial killer was back in 1979. Until March 17th. On that date, a letter was sent to the Wichita Eagle. A letter which contained photocopied pictures of the body and driver's license of Vicki Wegerle, who was murdered in 1986.It's as if BTK is saying: "'Look at what I've done.' He can't resist doing that," said Gregg McCrary, a former FBI profiler who operates a criminology consulting business in Virginia.
I hope the strangler continues to communicate with the media and police. Each contact increases the chance that they will finally catch the perpetrator.
(A friend from Wichita informed me of this recent development. She said that people there are taking this revived threat very seriously.)
