Shiny Distractions
I got a new toy last night and frankly, I'm finding it rather distracting. Too much to learn and too many enhancements to seek out, download and install.

There is plenty of great convention analysis all over, but not much here. Unless I can muster up some self control, it does appear like things will stay that way.

I’ve had an iPaq for a while.  It works great for me as I’m often on the road and need access to addresses and phone numbers from my contacts.  Its also nice because it has an alarm for meetings and appointments, something that has saved my butt more than once.

I bought some extended memory for mine as well and even use it as a portable MP3 player.  And nothing gets you through a long wait in a waiting room or something like having a few games along.

I think you’ll come to enjoy it.

I’m especially impressed by the built-it Wi-Fi.  Right now I’m trying to get a blogging application loaded and installed…

Yeah, mine doesn’t have wi-fi.  Which is just fine since wi-fi hasn’t exactly made it to North Dakota yet unless I were to buy a wireless router for my home/office.  Something I have no need for.

I saw your posts about posting from the iPaq.  I was going to mention Pocket Sharp to you, but see you already found it.

Regarding the handwritten aspect…

There is an app I found on the CD supplied with my HP Jornada (pre-mergere with Compaq and iPaq) called Transcriber.

It allows you to simploy write in almost any printing or cursive quality and it picks up the text.  You can still select the virtual keyboard for hard to get symbols (like numeral 1 and colons, etc) but the software is practically flawless.

I suppose it may not be available, I wouldn’t know.  I believe it is from Microsoft so perhaps you can get it there…

Once you get it onboard, can select each letter and deselect the ways you would never write a letter to speed up the translation.  Works as an input source for almost all PocketPC apps that I have used.

Good luck, and I am jealous of the onbaord wifi, my CF card draws big power!! :(

It looks like Transcriber is now part of the Pocket PC Operating System.  It seems like there are apsects of each entry system that I like.  None of them are the complete package for me, but hey - it’s only been a few hours of tinkering so far.

It takes a while to get used to entering information into these buggers.  Honestly, I’d never be able to do long posts using nothing but the stylus.  Its ok for entering notes and address/meeting info, but crappy for writing letters, etc.

There’s a number of portable keyboard options out there.  Setups that fold into a deck-of-cards sized package but unfold to give you a close-to-normal keyboard.  Maybe you’ll want to check one of those out.
