Protests are springing up everywhere. Saturday's protest was supposed to be against the war in Iraq (which ended months ago), but morphed into a protest against Israel, globalization, class warfare, Columbia and President Bush.

Now, a group of people are protesting halloween decorations in Florida:

For ten Halloweens, a witch about to be burned at the stake faced thousands of cars and trucks whizzing down Orange Blossom Trail -- and no one cared.

Until Oct. 11, that is, when Rowan Fox pulled into Kathy's Produce near Apopka to complain about the display. Now Kathy Plyler is besieged by angry e-mails and phone calls, some accusing her of perpetrating a hate crime.

Fox identified herself as a Wiccan and a witch. Didn't Plyler know that hundreds of thousands of people accused of witchcraft were burned in Europe during the Middle Ages?

Two extremely minor points:
     1. This is not Europe
     2. This is not the Middle Ages

It is not as if the display is anti-witch; it also includes a skeleton (hanging from a gallows), a dummy, some mummies, a casket and (horrors) a graveyard. It is actually surprising that the American Bone Cancer Association is not protesting the skeleton. It also must be noted that the casket and the graveyard could prove offensive to anyone who has suffered a family death at some point in their family tree.

But seriously, this whole situation is really just a misappropriation of resources. Don't burn the witch...build a bridge out of 'er!
