La Leche League will be happy at this news:
A compound in breast milk has been found to destroy many skin warts, raising hopes it also might prove effective against cervical cancer and other lethal diseases caused by the same virus. The 'compound' also has a name: HAMLET (Human Alpha-lactalbumin Made Lethal to Tumor Cells). I think contorting the name to match the acronym took as much effort as the research did. Doctors have known of the antibiotic effects of breast milk for years. It's effect against the human papilloma virus was discovered by accident in a different study.Skin warts are caused by the human papilloma virus, which is extremely widespread. Swedish researchers found that when the breast-milk compound is applied to the skin, it kills virally infected cells in warts resistant to conventional treatments.
And, no. Please don't ask for the address of the nearest wart treatment center. This is a serious post about a serious discovery. I'm trying my best not to think about the logistics of manufacturing and distributing such medication.
