Maybe the King is just getting a bit long in the tooth, but it seems Mr. Lileks notices the same fashion trends as I have:
Killed time at a bar, watched the crowd. Lots of young folk hyper-uber-hammered at 9 PM. Lots of young women who simply did not know how to dress, and lots of young men who couldn't have cared less. In the old days one would tell a lady that her slip was showing; now you feel compelled to point out that her thong is in danger of not being visible.
People used to dress for success. The game has definitely changed. As far as I can tell, the new objective is to appear as sleazy as possible. Do these young ladies disguised as prostitutes take offense when the receive a proposition?
It does makes sense from a manufacturing point of view. Less material. Less labor to assemble the stringy garments. The same price (at least) as clothing which does cover all the necessary parts. It all adds up to higher profits. (Perhaps they are just trying to recover from the grunge era and all its baggy, oversized clothes.)
Of course, I'm quite sure "Big Clothing" quakes in their collective boots when they read things like this or this. No profit for them at all there.
[ I'm sure this is where I'm supposed to make some revealing confession... ]
